Random Facts:
- Sumo wrestlers are banned from driving cars. However, it has nothing to do with public safety. It's just tradition. They were also the only individuals allowed to keep their topknot during the Meiji period (samurai could not).
- The first extensive use of the rickshaw for transportation started in Japan from the 1870's. Some say it was invented by an American missionary who needed a way to transport his weak wife through the streets of Yokohama.
- Nintendo, the world famous video game maker, started in the late 1800's as a playing card maker. The company didn't start making video games until 1977.
- Japan is home to the world's longest surviving monarchy, beginning as far back as 270 A.D.
